I am calling on Sadiq Khan to drop his plans to increase his share of council tax next year by 8.6% - almost twice the rate of inflation. Under Sadiq Khan, the Mayor’s share of council tax has increased by 70.8% - from £276.00 in 2017 to £471.40 for an average Band D household next year.
If Sadiq Khan managed London’s finances better, he would not need to increase his share of council tax. Sadiq Khan has shown time and time again that he is incapable of managing London’s finances.
Ultimately, Sadiq Khan is using Londoner's as a cash machine while mismanaging our public services causing government to step in and bail out the TfL network several times.
Some examples of TfL waste under Sadiq Khan include:
- £42m annually on 54,000 nominee passes, enough to fund 1,000 new staff
- 51.4m paid in “golden goodbyes” to 704 departing staff
- More than 750 TfL and Crossrail employees paid £100k+ compared to 597 in 2021/22 and 458 when Boris Johnson left office in 2016
- An employer contribution rate of 33%, compared with 21% for NHS pensions and an average of 19% for Local Government schemes
- The Mayor’s own review said around £100m p/a could be saved in TfL’s contributions if it were properly reformed
