A Statement from Felicity Buchan, MP for Kensington
On Friday 8th September an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck Morocco near Marrakesh.
I join the Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and Defence Secretary Grant Shapps in passing on my deepest condolences to the people of Morocco.
I am acutely aware that there is a sizable Moroccan diaspora in Kensington, and my thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones, or are awaiting further news from missing family members.
The UK Emergency Medical Team (EMT) is deploying a 4-person British medical assessment team to assess the situation on the ground and coordinate with Moroccan authorities. Following a large-scale natural disaster, it is crucial to assess existing healthcare capacity and the extent of damage to manage healthcare needs and provide support appropriately.
I have reached out directly to the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, His Excellency Mr Hakim Hajoui to arrange a meeting when a suitable time presents itself.
